What is "Tinning"?
When using the Durafix Easyweld rods it is often mentioned to "tin" your workpiece before welding or repairing.
This is a very simple step, but can be the difference between a good solid joint and a weak, waste of time. You would use this method mainly when joining two seperate pieces of metal, or repairing a broken part.
- Take one piece and if possible bevel the edge slightly to a 45° angle.
- Now heat with the torch.
- Rub the end of a rod onto the piece until it flows, moving the molten rod all along the working edge.
- Keep the heat onto the edge, and lightly brush the molten rod all over the edge with the stainless steel brush. You are creating a bonding platform!
- Now repeat steps 1 to 4 with the other piece.
- When you have done both pieces, put them in place and clamp firmly.
- Now rub again with the stainless brush until shiny.
- Reheat the weld or repair area and rub the rod onto it, letting it flow generously all over the join.
- When you're finished, slowly reduce the heat, fanning the torch away from the workpiece, for a few seconds or minutes depending on the size and thickness of the item
- Once you're done, leave it to cool naturally.
You should now have a very strong and duarble weld. The tinning process gives added strength and better bonding.
